What is RCS?

RCS is a next-generation messaging standard that provides enhanced features beyond traditional SMS. It allows for the exchange of multimedia content, group chats, typing indicators, read receipts, and more. Essentially, RCS bridges the gap between SMS and messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage, offering a more engaging experience within the native messaging app on your phone.

However, this revenue was declining due to the popularity of messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage.

Google played a pivotal role in driving RCS adoption, particularly in the US. They began adding RCS support to Google Messages in 2018 and launched their own RCS backend service called Jibe.

  • In 2021, AT&T and T-Mobile partnered with Google to use Jibe for their RCS services.
  • In 2023, Verizon also joined, bringing all major US carriers on board with RCS through Google Jibe.
  • Apple's Announcement (2023): In a major development, Apple announced in late 2023 that it would adopt the RCS standard, further solidifying its future.

While the technical development of RCS began over a decade ago, widespread carrier adoption has primarily occurred in the last few years, fueled by Google's efforts and Apple's recent announcement.

2024: The Year RCS Went Mainstream

  • In September 2024, Apple released RCS interoperability as part of iOS 18. Almost magically, every iPhone that upgraded to iOS 18 could communicate with Android and other RCS-compatible devices over RCS. (iPhone-to-iPhone communication still uses iMessage.)
  • Twilio and Infobip, two of the world's largest messaging communication providers, also began rolling out their RCS services in 2024.
